Why
use lattice?
Lattice provides an economical, easy-to-use, and versatile way to
enhance your home and property. Lattice can be used to provide privacy
and add style to outdoor projects, without sacrificing the splendor of
natural light. Because of its functionality and attractiveness, lattice
can add new dimensions to the appearance of your property.
Why use the lattice from Ryan Forest Products?
ACQ-treatment affords long life to your
lattice projects by preventing decay, insect attacks, and
decomposition. Use of clinched staples in fastening gives these
products added stability and durability. Isn't this the quality of
product you would like to use in and around your home? A full list of
our products' features can be found on our Lattice Products page. Look
for QUALITY... not all lattices are created equally!
Multiple styles of lattice
Ryan Forest Products offers multiple styles to satisfy all of your
lattice needs. Certain styles fit certain functions more naturally.
Here are some suggestions:
Getting Started
The Tools:
...are probably those that you already have: a power saw (or
fine-toothed hand saw), electric drill and bits, hot-dipped galvanized
screws, screwdriver, pliers, level, straight-edge, and chalk line.
Installation and Handling Tips:
- Follow the old carpenter’s rule:
“Measure twice, cut once!”
- Whenever you work with wood, always wear gloves, a
dust mask, and eye protection.
- Use only fasteners which are galvanized, aluminum, or
stainless steel. Since these are corrosion-resistant, they help prevent
rust stains.
- When cutting a lattice section, support it firmly to
avoid splitting or tearing the wood. Use of a straight-edge will help
produce a straight-line cut.
- For best results, use a carbide tip blade when
cutting through staples. (Alternative: remove staples prior to cutting.)
- On multiple panel projects: Check the laths to make
sure they all run in the same direction, i.e., the front face lath on
each panel should run in the same direction while the back lath should
all run in the opposite direction.
- Be sure to dispose of all treated lumber waste
properly. It should be disposed of in a landfill. Do not burn it!
- Make sure to wash your hands before eating or
drinking.
Lattice Cap Moulding:
For a more finished look, to protect the edges, and to strengthen the
overall structure, you can use cap moulding.
- To achieve neat, tight
joints, we recommend that you use a miter box. (Measurements of the
side of the lattice being framed must correspond to the length of the
cap at the bottom of the groove. You’ll need approximately
1” of extra moulding material for each miter joint that you make.)
- All corner cuts should be cut at a
45 degree angle to mitered ends of moulding before attaching to the
lattice panel.
- Cap moulding should be
attached to lattice with galvanized screws (#6-a minimum of 2”
long) at miter joints (from both directions). Drilling pilot holes for
screws will help prevent wood from splitting.
Applying the Finishing Touches:
You can leave your lattice work just as it is (for a natural look) or
you can paint it or stain it. Before finishing with a quality paint or
stain, first wait 6-8 weeks. Apply a quality sealer after installation
and at 18-month intervals to help protect your lattice.
Sit Back and Enjoy...
You’ve just enhanced the value and visual appeal of your
property, through some imagination, planning, and use of a quality
lattice product. You’ll appreciate the new dimension which
lattice has added to the outdoor areas of your home.
